Colon Hydrotherapy
Evidence suggests that colon hydrotherapy can help prevent disease and improve health. Historically, it was practiced by the Ancient Egyptians and later expanded upon by the Ancient Greeks. In the early 20th century, colonics were performed based on “autointoxication,” a hypothesis stating that when there is stagnation in the large intestine, toxins are more easily absorbed and can lead to chronic diseases. Modern research has confirmed the toxic effects of stagnated bowels and the positive effect of this therapy.
Colon hydrotherapy may:
- Help relieve constipation and restore bowel motility
- Rehydrate the large intestine
- Prevent harmful bacteria from colonizing the colon
- Help remove accumulated waste, mucus, irritants, and allergy triggers
- Improve the intestinal microbiome, correcting dysbiosis (microbiota imbalances)
During the treatment, the therapist may massage your abdomen to help move the water around and release accumulated gas and waste. The waste is expelled through the tube and sent to a clear viewing window on the machine. This allows the therapist (and patient) to observe the effectiveness of the treatment. This is the educational part of the procedure.
Toward the end of the session, the therapist may infuse wheatgrass, coffee, or probiotic “implants,” which you retain for a short time (if possible). The implant used depends on your individual needs, health condition, and medical orders. The entire session takes about 45-55 minutes.
Colon hydrotherapy is best used in conjunction with other therapies. It is included in many Sanoviv programs. When elimination is improved, the body can detoxify more effectively, a key component in healing.

Sanoviv does not recommend colon hydrotherapy for patients over 65 or under 18. Individuals over 65 years have a higher risk of complications. Alternate detoxification therapies may be substituted with your doctor’s consent.
